A Chatbase alternative for creators: when the product is you
July 28, 2026 · 5 min read · by the hiy team
Disclosure first: we make hiy, which competes with Chatbase for part of what it does — so read this knowing that. We've kept the Chatbase column to what their own public pages say, checked in July 2026; if we've got something wrong, tell us and we'll correct it.
Chatbase is a good product for the job it was built for. The argument of this post is narrower: if you're a creator, coach, or expert — a person with an audience, not a company with a ticket queue — it's the wrong shape, and the reasons why are worth understanding before you pick any tool.
What Chatbase actually is
Chatbase builds AI agents for customer service: train a bot on your docs and website, embed it, and let it deflect support questions. As of July 2026, their pricing page lists a free plan with 50 message credits a month and one agent (free agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity), then Hobby at $32/month for 500 credits, Standard at $120/month for 4,000 credits — where voice, telephony, and helpdesk features live — and Pro at $400/month for 15,000 credits, with enterprise above that.
Judged as a support-desk tool, that's a coherent ladder: you're a company, messages are tickets, and the metric is deflection rate.
Why the creator job is different
A support bot represents an organization; nobody minds if it sounds like one. A creator's bot answers as you, and that changes every requirement:
- Voice is the product. "Please refer to our documentation" is fine from a helpdesk and disqualifying from a person. A twin has to answer in your tone or it damages the thing it's supposed to scale.
- Wrong answers are worse than none. A support bot that misquotes a docs page wastes ten minutes. A bot that invents your opinion or your price does damage in your name. That's why grounding needs to be visible — an answer with the source one tap away — and why the honest fallback matters more than coverage.
- Message-credit math punishes success. A creator's whole aim is more conversations. Metering them means your best month is your most expensive one, and going quiet gets your free agent deleted. On hiy, visitors always chat free.
- The lead is a person, not a ticket. When someone's genuinely interested, you want their question attached to their email — a warm conversation to walk into, not a ticket to close.
What the creator-shaped tool looks like
This is what we built hiy to be, so hold the disclosure in mind: a twin at
hiy.ai/you, trained only on your published material, that cites the
passage behind every grounded answer, says "I don't know" in your voice
when your material runs out, and queues that question for
you — one reply teaches it
permanently. It's free to build and publish, and the one paid plan
is $49/month at the founding rate.
When Chatbase is the right choice
Also honestly: if you run a SaaS product and the job is ticket deflection with Zendesk and Stripe wired in, telephony, and a support team behind the bot — Chatbase is built for exactly that, and its Standard tier's feature list reads like that job description. hiy has support twins for products too, but Chatbase's helpdesk integration surface is deeper today.
The test that settles it: whose name is on the answers? If it's a company's, get a support desk. If it's yours, get a twin — and audit any twin, ours included, by asking one something it can't know and watching what it does.
